Dungeon Settlers Party Comp Tier List: Four Slots, Every Role
A week-one Dungeon Settlers party comp tier list — five comps from the starter benchmark to the misery build, plus the anti-comps that lose runs.
FAQ
What is the best party composition in Dungeon Settlers?
Do I have to fill all four expedition slots?
What happens to my comp when a settler dies?
With a four-slot expedition cap at clan Rank 1 and permanent death, composition is the build in Dungeon Settlers.

This tier list ranks five week-one comps — from the starter benchmark to an advanced curiosity — plus the anti-comps that lose runs, based on first-week community documentation against v0.4.19.
Comp A — the week-one “still alive” benchmark
- Guard: Lizardman shield — or a Human shield-user if the lizard rolled Poor Constitution
- Striker: Human sword
- Ranged: Human or Elf bow
- Flex: second Human fire caster, or a blunt Lizardman
Built to survive day-one halls and the Red Monster Rat: craft Cloth, then Bone; pack wood arrows and ointments. Not rated for Festering Burrow’s harder fights without gear upgrades — but every comp below is a modification of this spine.
Comp B — rank-2 Elf mixed roster
- Guard: Lizardman shield or greatsword
- Ranged: Elf bow with an Agility/Perception talent
- Caster: Nature or Water — a second Elf or an Intelligence Human
- Hybrid: a Human sword who also cooks between runs
The mid-game upgrade once clan rank 2 puts Elves on the board. The cost is real: Elves and Lizardmen need split kitchens (vegetarian and meat lines) — the “mixed-roster tax” covered in mood & food. The payoff is an Elf researcher whose bonus runs while the party dives.
Comp C — Water doorway
- Guard: any shield-user
- Caster: Water with an Intelligence talent — drop Bubblelings in the choke
- Ranged: safe damage
- Striker: blunt or sword to finish stunned targets
Summon control: extra bodies hold doorways without a fifth slot, and summons scale on the caster’s magic attack — gear the mage, not the pet. The stated failure mode is energy: pause, drink, recast. Best on floors you don’t want to deplete with extra bodies.
Comp D — Fire corridor
- Guard: any shield-user
- Casters: Human fire plus Human fire or sword
- Ranged: filler
Glass-cannon damage — two fire users clear corridors fast but empty their energy together, so stagger casts. Skip this comp with Poor Willpower talents, and remember Lizardmen’s −2 fire aptitude disqualifies them (race tier list).
Comp E — misery idol (advanced)
A curiosity, not a recommendation: a Forgotten Idol plus an Inscription of Gloom on a striker whose damage rises as mood falls. Only viable when beds, food, and recreation are already solved — “otherwise you invented a mental break.” Read inscriptions before you copy a streamer.
The anti-comps
| Anti-comp | Why it loses |
|---|---|
| Four strikers, no shield | Funny until Rat Swarm |
| Four Elves, no vegetarian kitchen | Carnal Guilt is not a personality |
| Four Lizardmen on a salad farm | Plant Rage, four times |
| Your only Genius researcher scouting | Permadeath does not care about the lab queue |
| Bow slot with no arrows packed | That’s Comp A with a melee intern |
Rules that outrank the tier list
- Four is a cap, not a requirement — a three-person run that comes home beats a wipe (and post-v0.4.23, the cap itself scales with clan rank)
- Always leave a cook or hauler at camp — an all-star team returning to rotting food trades a fight win for a mood crisis
- Rebuild around the survivor’s trees after a death, not the dead settler’s build plan (recruiting)
- Match the fight: the Chain Knight Sentinel resists both damage types — bring both, whatever the tier list says
