Dungeon Settlers Crafting & Gear Guide: Cloth to Carapace
How crafting and gear work in Dungeon Settlers — the Basic Workstation, the Cloth-to-Carapace-to-metal chain, seven gear slots, durability, and inscriptions.
FAQ
What gear should I craft first in Dungeon Settlers?
How does durability work in Dungeon Settlers?
What are inscriptions in Dungeon Settlers?
Crafting is the bridge between the two halves of Dungeon Settlers: the dungeon yields materials, the settlement turns them into the gear that makes the next descent survivable. The system’s shape is official — the research tree that gates recipes is visible in press-kit screenshots — and the tiers and durability rules below are first-week community documentation.
What’s the gear chain?
Cloth → Bone / Carapace → the current region’s metal.
- Cloth — the Basic Workstation turns raw material into starter gear: Textiles from Wild Long Grass, Cloth Armor, and Wood Arrows. Enough for trash mobs; not enough for named anything.
- Bone or Carapace — the tier boss prep is built around. Community guides put it plainly: cloth against a 144-attack elite is a prayer, not a plan — this is the Red Monster Rat requirement, and Carapace ties into the retuned Region 2 monster drops on the official known-improvements list
- Region metal — after region-1 recipes unlock; the tier that makes Festering Burrow survivable
The chain is gated by research unlocks — which is why the community research order puts Basic Workstation recipes first and gear tiers second.
What slots does a settler wear?
Seven, per community documentation:
- Main weapon
- Off-hand — shield or ammo
- Helmet
- Body armor
- Two accessories
- One more wear slot
Weapons add flat attack on top of the relevant stat — Strength/Agility/Perception for physical trees, Intelligence for magic — which is why a weapon-tree match beats a raw higher-number mismatch.
How does durability work?
- Weapons wear on hits; armor wears when hit
- Repair at camp between runs; carry a backup weapon on long pushes
- The classic pre-boss audit: check every durability bar before floor 5 — community guides single out “a leftover buckler at 8% durability” as a wipe in waiting
What are inscriptions?
Rarity-tiered modifiers etched onto gear — Common, Uncommon, Rare, Legendary — with three documented ways to get them:
- Rolled at level-up: level-ups offer Ability increases and inscriptions, with locking on Easy/Normal (leveling guide)
- Born-with on recruits: pre-inscribed hires carry a gold surcharge at recruiting — but at the level-up rarity weights, a pre-rolled Rare/Legendary is usually cheaper than chasing one later
- Community-documented rarity spread on level-up rolls: roughly 807 / 170 / 20 / 3 per 1,000
The flagship example is Gloom (Rare): +20% to all six major stats, permanent Mood −3 — strong on well-cared-for veterans, a mental-break factory otherwise (mood & food). The full odds, lock timeline, and surcharge economics live in the inscriptions guide.
What changes on the roadmap?
Per the official EA roadmap:
- Update 5: crafting improvements, new resources (Tin, Bronze, Iron, Gold), new research nodes
- Update 5 / 6: new weapon trees (Axe, Dagger) widen what’s craftable
- Region 2 floor-2 monster retune is on the known-improvements list — Carapace sources were explicitly part of that plan
Where to go next

- Weapon Tier List — what to craft for each role
- Boss Overview — the gear checks that give the chain its shape
