FAQ

What happens when stress fills up in Dungeon Settlers?
The settler suffers a mental break and the stress bar resets. The danger stack: if stress caps again mid-break, the settler dies — community guides call it a second permadeath channel alongside combat. Keep mood above zero so stress drains instead of filling.
Why is my settler's mood dropping after meals?
Most likely a diet penalty: Elves take Carnal Guilt (Mood −2) from carnivore food, Lizardmen take Plant Rage (Mood −2) from vegetarian food, and Humans take Growth Fatigue (Mood −2) while their XP bar sits maxed. The official Consume Policy screen lets you allow or ban foods per settler to prevent this.
Do beds matter that much?
Yes. Community documentation puts the comfort buff at roughly 135 seconds sleeping on the ground, 1,080 in a bed, and 2,160 in a proper bedroom — a bedroom triples the buff. Get settlers out of ground-sleeping within the first two days.

Combat isn’t the only way to lose a settler forever. The mind does the rest: mood, stress, and mental breaks form the second survival layer of Dungeon Settlers, and it runs on how you feed and house the colony. The meters themselves are official — Stress, Energy, and Hunger gauges are visible in CanOpener’s press-kit screenshots — while the behavior below is first-week community documentation.

How do mood and stress interact?

  • Mood is a per-settler stat on a scale that tops out around 30
  • Mood above 0 drains stress; mood below 0 fills it — the sign is the whole game
  • When stress caps, the settler suffers a mental break, then stress resets
  • If stress caps again mid-break: death — the second permadeath channel
  • Squad-wide negativity compounds: average mood held below roughly −3 can trigger Growing Discontent, a morale-crisis event

The practical consequence for expeditions: each day underground raises the Dungeon Stay mood drain (safe floors reduce it), so an archer mental-breaking mid-pull can ruin an otherwise clean boss attempt.

How do racial diets work?

Food splits into classes — roughly 13 vegetarian items, 10 carnivore, 2 omnivore — and each race mishandles one of them:

LizardmanPlant Rage (Mood −2)vegetarian food
HumanGrowth Fatigue (Mood −2)XP bar sitting at maximum

The official Consume Policy screen — visible in press-kit screenshots — is the mitigation tool: allow or ban specific foods per settler so the Elf never touches grilled meat and the Lizardman never gets turnip salad.

A mixed-race roster therefore needs two cooking lines, or you accept a permanent −2 on half the team — the “mixed-roster tax” priced into the party comp tier list.

What makes food actually good?

  • Cooked dishes carry their own mood value, and Guild tasks may require stockpiling food at Mood 1+, 2+, or 3+ — keep one good dish in reserve
  • Where they eat matters: a dining room stretches the buff; eating off the floor barely bothers
  • Recreation supplements, never replaces: Dice, Dart, and Card play tables each give a mood bonus per session, and repeating one game applies the Bored penalty — rotate

How does sleep factor in?

The community-documented comfort ladder: ground ≈ 135 seconds of buff, bed ≈ 1,080, bedroom ≈ 2,160 — a bedroom triples it, worth building within the first two days. And expectations scale: on Normal difficulty, mood contribution from levels 1–5 runs roughly +7 down to −7 — a high-level settler in a starter shack drags squad mood down. Housing density is a recruiting decision, not just a comfort one.

What gear and inscriptions touch mood?

  • Flower Necklace: Mood +2 worn
  • Echo Flower Ring: Mood +2 plus slight health regen
  • Forgotten Idol: damage rises as mood falls — the “misery build” centerpiece; risky
  • Inscription of Gloom (Rare): +20% to all six major stats, permanent Mood −3 — strong on well-cared-for veterans, dangerous otherwise (inscriptions explained)

The checklist

  1. Check diet tags at recruiting time, before the hire
  2. Run both vegetarian and meat production for mixed rosters
  3. Cook in a dining room, and keep a Mood 2+ dish for Guild tasks
  4. Never leave a Human’s XP bar full overnight (leveling)
  5. If average mood is negative, postpone deep expeditions — fix beds first
