Dungeon Settlers Materials Guide: Where to Farm Stone, Raw Hide & Clay
Where Dungeon Settlers materials come from — surface basics, the dungeon-only advanced tier, the post-Region-2 stone dungeon, and farming around depletion.

Where do I farm Stone in Dungeon Settlers?
Where does Raw Hide come from?
Can you gather advanced materials on the surface?
Can you buy materials instead of farming them?
Is the Infinite Abyss a good farming route?
Every gear tier in Dungeon Settlers eventually runs into the same wall: the settlement can’t make the material you need next. This page maps where each Early Access material actually comes from — the official surface/dungeon split first, then the community-documented farming routes that fill the gaps.
What comes from the surface, and what has to come from the dungeon?
The official split is blunt: the overworld hands you simple wood and rock — enough to keep settlers housed and fed — while food, treasure, and advanced crafting materials only come from the dungeon. That asymmetry is the engine of the whole loop: the surface keeps the colony alive, the underground is why you risk settlers you spent gold recruiting (recruiting guide).
One material category doesn’t show up in that split but matters just as much: research books. Community documentation has the Research Station’s book currency hauled out of the Veil of Silence specifically — Region 1 is not just a combat tutorial, it’s the research farm (how research works).

Where does each material come from?
| Material | Source | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Simple wood / rock | Surface gathering | The official basics — always available, never the bottleneck |
| Wild Long Grass → Textiles | Region 1 gathering | The Basic Workstation’s starter chain: Cloth Armor and Wood Arrows (crafting guide) |
| Research books | Region 1 runs | The Research Station’s currency (research guide) |
| Raw Hide | Region 1 reruns | Community-reported: rerunning the Veil of Silence beats full Region 2 clears for time efficiency |
| Clay | Region 2 | Community-reported specialization: the Festering Burrow is where clay comes from |
| Stone (bulk) | Stone dungeon | Community-reported: unlocks after clearing Region 2 — tiny floors, ~15 Stone each, up to 45 before chest bonuses |
| Bone / Carapace | Monster drops | The tier boss prep is built around; the official known-improvements list plans a Region 2 floor-2 retune so Carapace is obtainable there |
| Region metal | Region 2 recipes | Unlocked after region-1 recipes; the tier that makes Region 2 survivable |
| Lesser mana stones | Dungeon economy | Buy prayer blessings before named fights — Least up to Plentiful tiers (leveling guide) |
| Soulstones | Dungeon merchants | Official v0.4.23 restoration: purchasable in Regions 1 and 2, 7 types per merchant, with ownership conditions |

How do you farm Stone efficiently?
Before Region 2 is cleared, Stone drips: ordinary floor nodes, chests, and whatever the floor-5 bosses leave behind. The community-reported step change is the stone dungeon that unlocks after the Festering Burrow’s floor-5 boss goes down:
- Tiny floors — one fight, one chest, then the portal
- Roughly 15 Stone per floor, spiking to as many as 45 on good rolls
- Chest bonus days can push a run higher still
That unlock is one more reason the Chain Knight Sentinel fight is worth preparing for properly rather than banging your head against it (Festering Burrow guide).
Where does Raw Hide come from?
Raw Hide is the material community runners single out as the annoying one. The reported answer is counterintuitive: don’t chase it deeper — rerun the forest. Full Region 2 clears take longer, wear more gear durability, and expose a four-to-eight-member expedition to the Burrow’s elite fights; Region 1 reruns convert time into hide at a better rate, with research books and food as by-catch.
The catch is depletion: rerunning the same floors strips them. Rotate which floors of the Veil you clear between stone-dungeon runs rather than hammering one corridor.
Can you just buy materials?
For the endgame tier, yes — since v0.4.23, Soulstones can be purchased from the dungeon merchants in Regions 1 and 2. Both merchants sell the same 7 types, one of each eligible type each, and the purchase conditions are specific: you must not currently own the corresponding Soulstone or Soul Trait (a lost, repurchased Soulstone becomes buyable again once conditions are met).
The gold for that commerce comes from the same place as everything else — boss bounties and dungeon treasure — which is the loop closing on itself: farm the dungeon to buy from the dungeon.
How does depletion cap your farming?
Every farming route on this page shares one throttle: floors deplete as you clear them, and heavily depleted floors pay out significantly less — including lower boss and elite spawn rates, per community guides (depletion explained). The practical rule is rotation: vary floors, vary regions, and let stripped corridors recover while you push somewhere else.
And one route to explicitly cross off for now: the Infinite Abyss is a challenge mode, not a farm — its loot is placeholder until Update 4’s trophy building lands.
