Dungeon Settlers Party System: Four Recruits, Six Dimensions

What's confirmed about parties in Dungeon Settlers — the four-recruit cap, the six dimensions defining each settler, and how permanent death shapes planning.

9/2/2026 Dungeon Settlers Wiki 2 min read

Every expedition in Dungeon Settlers is carried by a small, sharply-defined party — and because death is permanent, who you bring matters more than in a typical RPG. This page covers the party system as confirmed by the developer’s Early Access announcement. Build math, role tier lists, and “best compositions” arrive after launch, once they can actually be tested.

How big can your party get?

Up to four recruits per expedition. That cap comes straight from the Early Access announcement, and it’s the number every party decision hangs on: four slots, each occupied by a settler you can lose forever.

What defines a recruit?

Six dimensions, per the announcement — every settler you hire is a combination of:

  1. Equipment — drawn from settlement storage at the departure screen
  2. Combat skills — what they can do in a fight
  3. Statistics — their underlying numbers
  4. Personality traits — who they are
  5. Race — with its own implications
  6. Background — where they came from

The departure screen ties it together: hands-on demo reports describe a readiness panel that flags missing gear before you leave — warnings like “3 of 4 party members lack head armor” — so equipment gaps surface before they kill someone.

Why does permanent death change party planning?

The announcement puts it bluntly: losing a trained settler doesn’t just cost you the fight — it disrupts the wider colony. A settler you’ve invested expeditions in is colony infrastructure. That’s the confirmed design intent; the practical meta (backup recruits, bench depth, risk management) is something players will work out in the Early Access build.

What we’ll decide at launch

The questions this wiki will answer with real data once Early Access ships:

  • Which of the six dimensions matter most for survivability?
  • How do you cover all four status effects (stun, bleed, burn, vulnerability) with four recruits?
  • What’s the real cost of losing a mid-game settler to the colony?
